Portuguese Question Words: O Que, Quem, Onde, and More

The seven core question words that unlock every 'wh-' question you'll ever need to ask.

Being able to ask questions is arguably more useful than being able to answer them — a good question keeps a conversation moving even when your vocabulary runs short. Portuguese builds almost every question around a small set of question words, and this guide covers all of them with real example questions.

Key Takeaways

  • Seven words cover almost every question you'll ask: o que, quem, onde, quando, por que, como, and qual.
  • Por que is written as one word at the end of a sentence — porquê — a spelling quirk worth knowing.
  • Qual vs. o que both mean "what," but aren't interchangeable — qual asks for a choice among options, o que asks for a definition or description.
  • Question intonation matters as much as word order — Portuguese often turns a statement into a question just by raising your pitch at the end, especially in casual speech.

The Seven Core Question Words

EnglishPortugueseExample
WhatO queO que é isso? (What is that?)
WhoQuemQuem é você? (Who are you?)
WhereOndeOnde fica o banheiro? (Where's the bathroom?)
WhenQuandoQuando você chega? (When do you arrive?)
WhyPor quePor que você foi? (Why did you go?)
HowComoComo você está? (How are you?)
Which/WhatQualQual é o seu nome? (What is your name?)

"Qual" vs. "O Que": The Real Difference

This is the one that trips up even intermediate learners. Use qual when you're asking someone to choose or identify from a set of options — Qual é o seu nome? (literally "which is your name," since a name is being picked out from all possible names). Use o que when you're asking for a definition, description, or explanation — O que é isso? ("what is that thing").

The Four Spellings of "Why/Because"

This is a genuine quirk worth memorizing: Portuguese has four related forms depending on position and meaning.

por quewhystart of a question
porquebecausestart of an answer
por quêwhyend of a question (isolated)
porquêthe reasonused as a noun
