Months, Days, and Dates in Portuguese
How to talk about when — the days of the week, months of the year, and how Portuguese actually writes out a date.
Scheduling anything — a class, a flight, a dinner reservation — means being able to say and understand dates confidently. Portuguese handles days, months, and dates a little differently from English, and this guide covers exactly what changes.
Key Takeaways
- Days of the week (mostly) are numbered, not named. Monday through Friday translate roughly as "second-fair" through "sixth-fair" (segunda-feira, etc.) — only Saturday and Sunday have unique names.
- Months look almost identical to English — janeiro, fevereiro, março — making them one of the easiest vocabulary sets to learn.
- Dates are written day-month-year, not month-day-year like in the US.
- Days and months are NOT capitalized in Portuguese, unlike English.
Days of the Week
| English | Portuguese |
|---|---|
| Monday | segunda-feira (or just segunda) |
| Tuesday | terça-feira (terça) |
| Wednesday | quarta-feira (quarta) |
| Thursday | quinta-feira (quinta) |
| Friday | sexta-feira (sexta) |
| Saturday | sábado |
| Sunday | domingo |
Months of the Year
| English | Portuguese | English | Portuguese |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | janeiro | July | julho |
| February | fevereiro | August | agosto |
| March | março | September | setembro |
| April | abril | October | outubro |
| May | maio | November | novembro |
| June | junho | December | dezembro |
How to Write and Say a Date
Portuguese writes dates as day, then month, then year — the same order used across most of the world outside the US. August 11, 2026 becomes 11 de agosto de 2026, read aloud as "onze de agosto de dois mil e vinte e seis."
For "what's the date today," ask Que dia é hoje? or Qual é a data de hoje? — either works in both Brazilian and European Portuguese.
